Omega Linked to The Great Debaters

The Film-On Dec. 25, "The Great Debaters" appeared in theaters with Denzel Washington as its director and star, and Oprah Winfrey as producer.

Tolson is a member of Omega Psi Phi, a member of Beta Chapter (Lincoln Univ. PA) when Langston Hughes was there in the '20s. He was a managing editor of The Oracleat one point in time and was a graduate scholarship winner also.

The film depicts Wiley's most glorious chapter: 1935, when the blackpoet and professor Melvin B. Tolson coached his debating team to anational championship. . . . There are hopes to revive the debateprogram, and in a movie tie-in, Wal-Mart is to endow a Melvin B. TolsonScholarship Fund with $100,000. . . .

By the time Mr. Tolson arrived in 1923, Wiley had emerged as an eliteinstitution for the black middle class. The son of a Missouri preacher,Mr. Tolson had a soul fed by the Harlem Renaissance. He was both fearedand loved, inspiring, as one biographer wrote, "devotion bordering onadulation in many who knew him well." He remained at Wiley 24 years,publishing his most heralded work of poetry a year before his death in1966.

Wiley's 1935 victory over the University of Southern California (theopponents in the film are from Harvard) inspired people long denieddignity in white society. But the film omits one reality: even thoughthey beat the reigning champions, the Great Debaters were not allowed tocall themselves victors because they did not belong to the debatesociety, which did not allow blacks until after World War II. . . . There are plans to establish the campus's first endowed chair, namedafter Mr. Tolson. The poet's home, next to campus, now sports a sign inthe yard advertising its place in history.

Rho Xi Blood Drive

Bro. Omar Sesay organized a successful blood drive in Clute, TX on January 12, 2007. The bruhs of Rho Xi exceeded their goal of 20 units and ended the day with 40 units. We also want to thank the Gulf Coast Reginal Blood Center for ther excellent work.

Perception of an Omega Man

Today I want to address the perception of an Omega Man. I have met many people after joining this prestigious organization. If the conversation calls for it, I humbly say that I am an Omega. After claiming my love for the purple and gold, the conversation goes as such especially if the other person is of the female species.

Female: Oh you a Que Dawg!!!!
Bruh: I am and Omega man.
Female: I know how yall are.

It is at that point the Bruhs can do one of two things, continue to feed female’s perception and be flirtatious in a nonchalant way or educate the female on what being an Omega is all about.

Having said all of that, there is a time and a place for everything. I can be owt with the best of them but if I am suited up like our forefathers, the typical response is, “You don’t look like a Que.” My reply, ”Thank you, what is a Que Dawg suppose to look like.”

The Power of QUE Networking

One of the main reason I started this blog is because some people underestimate the power of networking. Before I go any further I want to propose the creation of an Omega Investment Club through the power of networking.

One of the joys of being in this fraternity is the ability to reach out to the brotherhood and receive whatever you are in need of. Well today, I am in need of some brothers with expertise in investing, accounting and finance. I want to uplift this idea and also provide the brotherhood with some tips on make networking more useful in your walk of life.

Being of like minded individuals and ideas, regardless of schools, chapters and districts we should be able to accomplish great things in numbers. Need I remind you of Psalms 133,

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity

The fraternity has done great things of monumental proportion that are documented and undocumented and there should be no reason why this should not come to pass.

We all know the power of time and money and I believe this idea would not only help the fraternity as a whole but the members that make up our beloved organization.

I would love to see 500,000 bruhs invest $1,000 and make a sound investment as an organization.

Anything worth having is not without opposition and hard work. We all know about “See it Through” and “Perseverance”, otherwise this fraternity would not be 97 yrs in existence. So I have all the confidence in the world that this can be doned

I will personally contact someone at the headquarters so receive a response to my aspirations. In the meantime apply these networking principles inside and outside the frat.

Networking Tips

1. Prepare a plan. Networking goes beyond greeting people. You need to prepare a step-by-step plan for how you'll build relationships and how you can effectively tell your story. When people ask you what you do, make sure you have a clever opening line to introduce yourself and your business.
2. Learn to communicate more easily. To be a good networker, you need to work on your ability to make small talk. You need to be able to articulate what you do in clear, easily understandable, and memorable way. You will defeat the purpose of networking if you continuously stick with familiar faces. Get interested in what others are offering or saying without being abrasive.
3. Identify your prospects. Know your most likely market, and learn where you will find them. Research as much as you can from the ideal prospects for your business. How do they get their information? Do they live nearby? What activities do they participate in? What organizations do they belong to?
4. Start with people you know. Look at your roster of friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and people you have come across in your lifetime. From among your friends, identify whom you think might be able to help you the most.
5. Get involved. A key to successful networking is to get involved. Participate in organizations, events, professional groups and social clubs that offer opportunities for you to meet and greet. Participate in numerous networking groups, attend conferences and training seminars. With the advent of the Internet and http://fietts.blogspot.com , you can also network in online newsgroups and discussion boards.
6. Make networking a part of you. Make it a point to meet new people wherever you go - whether you are on the plane, waiting in line at the bank, or fetching your child from school. Be generous in giving away your business cards

I guess by now you can tell I’m a Que. If you haven’t heard the song by Pinc Gator. Here is your chance to hear the song and support the Bruh. He has been hitting the Houston scene real hard and recently had a video shoot back in Sept. of 07. Manhood is our Foundation

First and foremost, Happy New Year’s to the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. As I pondered on my goals and contributions to the fraternity for 2008 we decided to use my Information Technology expertise to bridge the gap from far and near. There are many other forms of communication but we decided that blogging would be best suited for me and any other brothers who see fit. If you would like to be a contributing writing please contact us.

The purpose of this blog is to provide newsworthy events, provoking thoughts, advertising of events, networking for the brotherhood and information that could help us in our everyday lives as a man. In doing so, there is a time and a place to express your opinions on various topics so use your better judgment and discerning spirit.

It is only right to start this blog from the roots and foundation of our organization and that would manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. So in the next coming days we will address each principle.

Two definitions of manhood I read was:

1. The period in a male's life after he has transitioned from boyhood, at least physically, during puberty.

2. The composite of qualities, such as courage, determination, and vigor, often thought to be appropriate to a man.

True enough we could discuss many different aspects on manhood but I will let my blogging spirit lead me as we go. Nevertheless, we will address the above mention definitions as it relates to men and my walk of life.

We would not be who we are today if we didn’t have wise counsel growing up no matter where the counsel came from. It would be a tragedy for a young man’s transition from boyhood to manhood to be only physically and not mentally as well. I am speaking of responsibility, accountability and any other areas that one may matriculate in life to become the best man that you could possibly be.

We didn’t become of a member of this fraternity by happen stance. Someone thought of you to have such qualities of courage, determination, and vigor, often thought to be appropriate to a man. This fraternity would not be in existence today if Dr. Ernest Just, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman and the brothers who followed who had the same qualities.

Being of liked mined individuals of similar ideas we should be able to get back to our foundation and continue to be a thriving force in our respective community. It is only right to share our wisdom amongst the brotherhood and in the lives of our young men.
This could be done in church, schools, business, etc. Do we live busy lives? Of course we do but we make time for, what we deem our desires and wants that are in our hearts. What I am saying is that the same fire you had before Omega that has turn into a blazing fire after Omega us it when the time permits.

It is my desire that this blog may enrich the lives of the members of our fraternity and the male species as a whole. Our fraternity was here before many and will be here after many. As a result, take the time to improve upon your manhood and educate our young men about manhood. Those young men may choose to have the same aspirations as you.
